Long time, no post!
Howdy folks! Wanted to give an update since it’s been over a month with no changes to the adventure.
There’s a few things that have slowed progress: We had a player drop out early in the playtest, it was my birthday last month, work has been pretty busy. But. One of the biggest reasons was the recent release of Adventures in Rokugan.
Adventures in Rokugan (AiR) is a version of L5R that uses 5e SRD (Dungeons and Dragons) rules. Since D&D is known as the worlds most popular monster slaying sim, this had me thinking about what TatGoH (this adventure) had to do to get to where it is now, all the compromises and houserules, and if refitting this adventure for AiR would instead be the move to make.
For instance, I had still never figured out a way to randomize loot beyond using the Wheel of Discord or by just telling the GM to plan their loot ahead of time. 5e SRD has enough math rocks to randomize anything! And there’s so many “loot tables” out there on the internet.
Second instance, I did get to try using “mob rules” during the playtest but it didn’t feel right. I think I would scrap mob rules altogether and tell the Players to instead focus on obtaining techniques with area of effect or multiple targets. AiR has a lot of built in rules for multi target attacks and techniques with area of effect. It’s a natural part of the game. And honestly I’m not sure exactly how many Kata (for example) there are in L5R 5e that have multiple targets or area of effect. I’ll have to look into it.
The whole thing about Oni being able to use their techniques within their Oni Lair as if they were in the same scene with the players. I think there’s such thing as Lair Actions in 5e SRD. Same effect, no homebrew needed.
So… with all that said. I’m interested in redoing the adventure, focused on AiR, with maybe some side notes related to L5R RPG if folks still want to run the adventure using that system. I believe that L5R RPG’s use of Opportunities is much more interesting than the binary pass-fail of D&D, and for that reason I still want to give folks the option of using that system in this adventure.
Thank you for following along! Looking forward to more updates soon.
