Fu Leng meets Calamity Ganon [BotW]
This video by Play Your Role talks about what Calamity Ganon stands for in BotW, and what these concepts could do for D&D. And honestly I think the points made here are fantastic takeaways for a Thunders campaign through the shadowlands.
Takeaways:
- Ganon’s presence can be seen just about everywhere: from the highest points, from wide open fields, and even from the destruction that followed from wars past. Even the enemies you fight, the blights who are aspects of Ganon, the corrupted areas across the land that make areas hard to traverse.
- Ganon seems like you can just run up and fight him anytime, but of course, the path there is very dangerous and would tell the Player that bum rushing Ganon is a bad idea (still their decision to make though).
- The guardians around the map pose opportunities for the Player to gain power to better become equipped for the Ganon fight.
- The blights (aspects of Ganon) teach the players about a game mechanic that may be important during their final showdown.
How does this translate?
- Take the idea presented in the adventure about the Oni Lords’ influence being reflected in their province, and zoom out. What powers does Fu Leng possess, and how is that influence reflected across the entire shadowlands, including the Lords that serve under him?
- Maybe the entrance to the Festering Pit has some beacon of light, or vivid billow of smog, or mountains, all in that signature green that contrasts against the gloomy purple sky. The players know they could just make a straight path there, but it will be very difficult.
- Perhaps aspects of Fu Leng roam the Shadowlands. Once upon a time Fu Leng was defeated and pieces of him were sealed away by 12 black scrolls. Perhaps the final pieces of Fu Leng have been freed but they have to physically make their way back to the Pit. Or, maybe Fu Leng sends aspects of himself, conjured by each element of Kansen, and they pursue the party across the Shadowlands, only to be relevant during sessions where completing one’s quest is a possibility.
- The GM should make it clear that defeating these Oni Lords will promise much needed experience and powerful artifacts to help in their final showdown. We also know this is a great way to awaken one’s equipment. A legend can be shared by Shinsei about an Oni Slaying katana, awakened by such a fight by the previous Thunders. The players think they’re looking for a legendary weapon but are surprised when their very own weapon awakens instead.
- Each aspect of Fu Leng features a key mechanic that will be relevant to the final battle with Fu Leng. Whether that’s representing his Maho, his shadowlands powers, immunities, or some weakness.
